Chapter Fifty-Nine

Lefty was lost in his thoughts when he felt his cellphone buzz in his pocket. Instead of seeing who was demanding his attention, he chose to ignore the call. He was too concerned with how the sheriff’s department would interpret the items of clothing he had left behind in the woods. Would it be too difficult to identify them as Nora’s? It seemed easy enough, at least to him. But perhaps he was too close to the crime to see it for what it truly was.

He suddenly worried he might have to go back to the woods. He heard the bedroom door open in the rear of the small house. Lefty lifted his head and when Rachel Sweeney stepped into the light, their eyes met. Lefty smiled.

He was sitting on the couch, his left arm slung over the back, his right knee crossed over his left. Lefty said, “Tell me, sweetheart, what’s it like to never age?”

Rachel cracked a smile, the first one today, though Lefty could see she was still struggling with Nora’s disappearance. Rachel said, “Are you hungry? I can make you a sandwich.”

Lefty said, “Shouldn’t I be the one to offer to take you out?”

“And go where? To another restaurant? No thanks. I spend my life serving meals inside restaurants. When I’m home, I want to stay home.”

“I’m not hungry,” Lefty said. “But thanks, anyway.”

He extended his arm and offered his hand to Rachel. She stepped forward and put her small hand into his. Lefty closed his fingers around her wrists and yanked her to the couch, where he wrapped her up in his arms. He said, “However, I would like to take a vacation with you.”

Rachel angled her head and turned to face Lefty. She gave him a curious look and said, “A vacation?”

Lefty said, “What do you say? Let’s leave this county and go somewhere neither of us has ever been. It would be fun. I’ll pay. You don’t have to worry about anything, other than packing your own bags.”

“You’re serious?”

Lefty grinned. “I could use a vacation, and I know you could too. Besides, it would be good for us to take our minds off of things.”

Rachel leaned back and snuggled deeper into Lefty’s arms. She stroked his forearm with her painted nails and, without thinking, Lefty kissed the top of her head as he gently played with her soft hair.

“Before you let yourself get too far,” Rachel said, “you should think about your wife and family.”

Lefty kissed her head again and said, “This has nothing to do with them.”

Rachel unwrapped herself and got up off the couch. Lefty remained seated and watched a noticeably tense Rachel begin to pace the floor. What was she thinking? Whatever it was, he was certain she was overthinking it.

Lefty said, “I heard the sheriff was out near Climbers trailhead this morning.”

Rachel stopped and asked, “Did they find her?”

Lefty shook his head no. “We would have heard if they did.”

“I’m worried something happened to her. It isn’t like Nora to not show up for work.
